The energy data for the academic year 2007/08 for the residences at BCU showed that, averaged across the halls, energy usage had decreased by 9.9% compared to the previous years. Every hall reduced its electricity usage although Oscott clearly led the way from Westbourne and Coppice. The fina league table was as follows:
On the basis of the energy data, around 75 tonnes of CO2 have been kept out of the atmosphere, particularly as a result of the actions of the Eco-Power Rangers who number over 525 and equate to over 25% of the students living in residences at the University. The energy saved is enough to power a 15W energy saving lightbulb for over 1300 years!
To celebrate their success, the residents of Oscott Gardens were invited to a Green party hosted by the main sponsors of the initiative, E.ON, at the end of the academic year. The party included a BBQ, live steel band and zero carbon games such as sumo suits and Giant Jenga.
We hope that the students keep up their good work when they move into private accommodation. Remember that every single energy-saving action makes a difference. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise!
