The energy data for the academic year 2007/08 for the University of Birmingham showed that, averaged across the halls, energy usage decreased by 6.3% compared to the previous years (and after factoring in variations in temperature). Every single hall reduced its electricity usage which was encouraging and Oakley Court won from Jarratt and Elgar Court and Maple Bank. The final league table is as follows:

Hall   Kilowatt-hour reduction per resident per day
 Oakley Court  1.41
 Jarratt  0.82
Elgar Court and Maple Bank  0.65
 Tennis Court  0.51
 Spinney  0.30
 Pritchatts  0.30
 Aitken Wing  0.23
 Shackleton  0.02

On the basis of the energy data, around 66 tonnes of CO2 was kept out of the atmosphere, particularly as a result of the actions of the Eco-Power Rangers who numbered over 400 and equated to 12% of the students living in residences at the University. The energy saved is enough to power a 15W energy saving lightbulb for over 1150 years!
To celebrate the success of the initiative, E.ON contributed £1000 towards the end-of-year event organised by the Residents Associations on Saturday 14th June 2008. The event included zero carbon games such as sumo suits and Giant Jenga.
We hope that all the students involved in the initiative keep up the good work when they move into private accommodation and remember that every single action makes a difference. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise
